| Macroprolactin is an immunoglobulin-bound form of circulating prolactin which can cause falsely elevated serum prolactin concentrations. It is tested by measuring prolactin recovery on polyethylene glycol treated samples | |
|
Recovery >60%: Sample contains mostly monomeric prolactin. Recovery between 40 and 60% - gray zone: In addition to monomeric prolactin, sample also contains macroprolactin and/or oligomeric prolactin. Results need to be reported as such. Further assessment is necessary (e.g. gel filtration chromatography) Recovery <40%: Sample contains mostly macroprolactin and/or oligomeric prolactin. Results need to be correlated to clinical findings. No known common methodological interferences. |
