Introduction

Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia and infectious diseases in pregnancy screening programme is a national programme.  North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust participates in Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia and infectious diseases in pregnancy screening programme to offer timely antenatal screening to all women and couples so that informed decision can be made.

The aims of the programme are:

  • To screen women by 10 weeks + 0 days gestation.
  • To offer prenatal diagnosis (PND) to at risk women and couples by 12 weeks + 0 days gestation.
  • To perform PND before 12 weeks + 6 days gestation.

When a woman is booked for antenatal care at Peterborough City Hospital, the healthcare professional and with the woman consent must complete the Family Origin Questionnaire (FOQ) together with a blood sample must be sent to the laboratory for testing. If the woman is affected or a carrier then the baby’s biological father must be offered a screening test to determine the risk of the pregnancy.
