Serum/plasma calcium concentrations are used in the investigation and/or monitoring of calcium metabolism disorders. The laboratory reports plasma/serum total calcium and corrected calcium. The corrected calcium adjusts the calcium concentration according to the serum albumin concentration (due to the binding of calcium ions to albumin).
Samples contaminated with EDTA (from FBC bottles) can have falsely low calcium results. Intravenously administered contrast media for MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) contain chelating complexes which may interfere with the determination of calcium. Drugs containing strontium salts may lead to significantly increased calcium results. Where possible it is preferable for samples to be collected after a period of fasting.
Total Calcium: A reference interval for this test result has not been provided because individual factors, such as medications, diet, and other health conditions, may significantly affect the interpretation of the results. For further discussion, please contact the Consultant Chemical Pathologist.
