FRESH specimens in a sterile 60 ml wide mouth sterile container are essential. All specimens should be sent to the laboratory immediately after collection. Ensure that all specimens are fully labelled with patient’s identification.
Out of normal Cellular Pathology laboratory working hours, please store this specimen in the fridge until they can be delivered to the laboratory. |

Interferences |
A morning specimen is preferable but not the first expectoration. Deep cough sample (NOT saliva) obtained before eating, drinking or teeth cleaning
The sample should be sent fresh and arrive at the laboratory within two hours of collection
Sputum samples are not suitable for investigation of Pneumocystis carinii; bronchial washings should be taken. |
