Specimen Collection

For platelets to be issued, a valid historic Group and Save must be on record. A current group is not necessary. Please note that due to the short shelf life of platelets, there is usually no surplus stock held on site. Please give as much advance notice as possible so that platelets can be ordered from NHS Blood and Transplant (minimum delivery time 2 hours), and provided on time.

Turnaround time

Dependent on urgency. Please discuss with laboratory.

Test indications

If transfusion of platelets is required to restore haemostasis for when the patient is actively bleeding or is due for a surgical procedure which might induce bleeding. Please refer to Pathology policies and guidelines in the document library of the Trust’s intranet for guidance.
