Uric acid measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of numerous renal and metabolic disorders, including renal failure, gout, leukaemia, psoriasis, starvation or other wasting conditions, and of patients receiving cytotoxic drugs.
The recovery of uric acid may be falsely low when the blood sample is taken while levels of NAC, N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI, paracetamol metabolite), and Metamizole (Novaminsulfone, Dipyrone) are present. Venipuncture should be performed prior to the administration of Metamizole. Venipuncture immediately after or during the administration of Metamizole may lead to falsely low results.
Calcium dobesilate causes artificially low uric acid results. Uricase (e.g. recombinant uricase used to treat hyperuricaemia) reacts specifically with uric acid and may cause instability of uric acid in vitro. Other purine derivatives can inhibit the uric acid reaction.
