Fluid Sample Collection
A variety of fluid specimens can be submitted to the laboratory for Pathological testing, these include pleural, ascites, drains, fistula, stoma output, etc.
Fluids should be collected into the following vessels:
- For Clinical Biochemistry:
- Most fluids can either be collected into either a Sarsted gel tube (brown) lid or a 20ml universal container for routine parameters, such as protein, electrolytes, etc.
- Samples for fluid glucose should be collected into a Sarsted fluoride-EDTA (yellow) tube
- Samples for fluid pH should be collected as per the blood gas analysis procedure
- For Microbiology, specimens should be collected into 20ml universal containers
- For Cellular Pathology, specimens should be collected into 20ml universal containers
