Issue of Blood Products: Blood for Babies (For neonates <4 months old)

For blood to be issued, a maternal Adult Group and Save must be on record that was taken at or after delivery. If this is not available, then a full 3.4ml EDTA bottle of the baby’s blood will be required to perform a manual crossmatch on. Please state the volume of blood required for transfusion in ml.

Turnaround time

Dependent on urgency of blood and whether electronic issue is suitable. Please discuss with laboratory.

Interferences

Red cell antibodies can prevent blood from being crossmatched in a timely manner.
