Specimen Collection

3.4ml EDTA (Red lid). Minimum 1ml (further samples may be required if atypical antibodies are found). If patient is below 4 months old, please see Baby group and DCT instead.

Turnaround time

1 working day. Emergency requests 2 hour.

Test indications

To determine a patient's ABO group and antibody status.

Interferences

Haemolysed or lipaemic samples may not be able to complete testing, whereupon new samples will be required.

N/A

Minimum retesting interval

A group and save sample will be valid for a minimum of 3 days.
Depending on previous transfusion history and/or pregnancy a sample may be valid for up to 28 days.
Contact the transfusion laboratory for advice.
