Specimen Collection

3.4ml EDTA (Red lid). 1.3ml EDTA for paediatric (Red lid). Carried out on FBC specimen. Test will be automatically added on by laboratory staff if indicated by haemoglobinopathy screen results.

Test indications

Investigation of suspected variant haemoglobin following initial results from HPLC and/or sickle solubility screening, to detect haemoglobins A, S, C, D(G), E and/or F.

Interferences

Haemolysis, clotted samples, anaemia, recent blood transfusion or history of bone marrow transplant.

Reference Range

N/A

Minimum retesting interval

Hb Electrophoresis requests made where historic results exist on a patient are intervened.
