Specimen Collection

3.4ml EDTA (Red lid). 1.3ml EDTA for paediatric (Red lid). Carried out on the Full Blood Count specimen. malaria screens may be added on to samples that are up to 24 hours old.

Patient details

Patient's recent travel history is required & must be included on the request form

Turnaround time

4 hours

Test indications

Suspected malarial infection based on travel history, or monitoring of treatment of current malarial infection. Note that non-malarial blood-borne parasites detected by this test (e.g. Trypanosomes, Babesia, Microfilaria) will be reported on the blood film set.

Interferences

Previous antimalarial therapy.
