Test indications

Striated muscle antibodies can be associated with myasthenia gravis, and is a significant finding because nearly all patients with these antibodies and myasthenia have a thymoma. They are not diagnostic of thymoma, and can be seen in patients on penicillamine, following a bone marrow transplant, and in graft-versus-host disease. Acetylcholine receptor antibodies are a more specific and sensitive test for myasthenia gravis.
