Test indications

This test is used in the investigation of patients suspected to have Chronic Granulomatous disease.

 

Presentation usually occurs in childhood with:

 

1.     Deep seated infection (Liver, perirectal or lung abscess, adenitis; or osteomyelitis) typically due to catalase-negative organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Serratia marcescens, or Aspergillus.

2.     Granulomatous disease in the gastrointestinal tract may mimic inflammatory bowel disease.

3.     Granulomata in respiratory, gastrointestinal or urogenital tracts may cause obstruction.

Sample storage and transport conditions can significantly affect cell viability, in particular samples must not be refrigerated. Concurrent sepsis or hyperglycaemia will interfere with this assay.
