Placental Specimens

Placentas for routine histology must be sent to the department in formalin fixative and accompanied by a fully completed East Anglian Pathology request form.

Placentas for CESDI storage must be sent to the department in formalin fixative with an accompanying storage request form. If histology is subsequently required on these specimens, clinicians must send a written request and fully completed East Anglian Pathology request form to the department. A pathologist will decide if the placenta will be examined in this department or will require referral to a specialist centre. If referral is necessary, the laboratory will make the necessary arrangements for transportation of the specimen to the referral laboratory.

Please note that this department does not make arrangements for the referral of cytogenetics specimens.
