5-Hydroxyindole-3-acetic Acid

24hr urine collection into glacial acetic acid preservative. Sample pH must be between 4-6.

Patients should receive acidified urine collection bottle in a sealable bag, collection jug and appropriate paperwork.

The quantitative determination of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid in urine is employed in the diagnosis of carcinoid syndrome and for the monitoring of therapy.
The following foodstuffs contain large amounts of serotonin, and their consumption results in an increase in 5-HIAA excretion. Patients should avoid these foodstuffs 2 days prior to and during the collection: Aubergines, avocados, bananas, blackcurrants, damson plums, gooseberries, melons, mirabelle plums, pineapples, red currants, tomatoes and walnuts.

Random urine 5-HIAA: A reference interval for this test result has not been provided because individual factors, such as medications, diet, and other health conditions, may significantly affect the interpretation of the results. For further discussion, please contact the Consultant Chemical Pathologist.
