3.0ml Citrate (Green lid). 1.4ml Citrate for paediatric (Green lid). Fill to mark.

Turnaround time

Less than 8 hours. Samples older than 24 hours on receipt cannot be processed.

Test indications

Investigation of Deep Vein Thrombosis/Pulmonary Embolism, and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC).


Pregnancy, lipaemia, haemolysis, infection and inflammation.

Reference Range

<243ng/ml. For patients aged 50 and over presenting with suspected VTE in line with NICE guidelines 2020 NG158: Please use clinical presentation, calculate the Wells score and consider an age-adjusted cut-off threshold for D Dimers (patient age x 5), instead of the stated cut-off value. Adult reference range established in-house from reagent manufacturer.

Minimum retesting interval

D Dimer requests that are made within 5 days of a previous request on a patient are intervened unless investigating DIC.
